True movements don't happen when a lot of people do what they are told; they happen when a lot of people do what they have not been told.  Like a school of fish turning in an instant, a true movement relies on the combustion that takes place in each participant: each must bring their own energy to the party.  Technology, globalisation, rationalisation and pseudo science/religion may have brought about sustained and intense cultural change but they cannot fill the void in our souls.  We are still human, still built from the blueprint with the potential for eternity; try as we like, we cannot recreate ourselves as robots or clones of the images we worship in TV and magazines. Joining the pyramid club will not buy eternal life nor truth - it is subject to the same forces of decay and destruction as all other purely human efforts.

Prayer is the antithesis of religion.  It is not a ritual or an activity, it is a language. It is the language of a country we long for and have barely come to know but in which we belong. The more we learn the language of prayer, the more native we become to the true land of our heart: it is in this outward, self-constructed world of darkness and self-management that we are alien. The first conversation ever to take place in human culture was a conversation between a man and his Creator. Prayer is the original heart language of humanity.  When you speak the language of prayer you are speaking from the deepest part of yourself, from a created place so buried, so lost to us that its every word seems foreign.  No wonder it's a battle or avoided. We have so forgotten who we are that the language of our birth seems strange to us. You were not created to be foreign to the things of God. You were made to be a native-speaker of prayer.

Prayer allows us to connect with our Creator. You don't need a Smartphone or Android or to upload a recent pic.  You don't have to have over 500 friends or 2000 followers.  No connection is more vital to our functioning as human beings and no relationship is more beneficial to our health. We were created for intimacy with God, born for this companionship and joy. And yet somewhere we have lost this simple key. In all the complexitites of our techno-rich world, in all the multiple connections made possible by magic machines from the satellites that circle our planet to the phones that sing in our pockets, we have lost track of the simple capacity to walk with God.  Here, now, in reality, in the everyday - not in some synthesised spirituality but something that is truer than the air you breathe. Yet establishing it is as simple as breathing.  As letting go of self. As letting the Eternal Creator, the Author of Life in. No one can do it for you.  The choice is yours.  But if you don't breathe, eventually...you die.
