LOADED
Club night 10.30pm – 2.30am
Soul, The City Function Suite, Dundee
Opening night Friday August 28th
‘Loaded’ is the club night brainchild of Dek Whitton and Sean McCrae – the answer to what to do in Dundee on a Friday night once the pubs close. Hosted at Soul, the City Function Suite opposite the Seagate bus station, it is a monthly affair with the next one scheduled for Friday September 25th and thereafter Friday October 16th.
The night plays everything – not just indie – from Motown, soul, heavy rock, Girls’ Aloud and everything in between.
Dek: ‘Myself and Sean spoke about doing a clubnight pretty much from the moment we met. We’re both like-minded when it comes to music and have massive music collections of all different genres.
‘We finally got the finger out to give this a bash. We’ve done aftershows for The View and The Law at Soul before and they both went really well so we knew we could aim for the same crowd. But this time not just indie!’
The pair are also getting guest djs in with Pete Reilly from The View doing the set on Friday October 16th.
The opening night seemed to be a bit thin on the crowd earlier but, by 11.30pm, the crowds started pouring in and, in no time, the dancefloor was filled. The poor bouncer chap kept trying to drag people off with their drinks but that was the most mischief to be had all night.
The venue is ideal – great sound, some nice nooks and crannies if you just want to hide away, friendly bar staff and cheap drinks, a good dancefloor and decent toilets. There is even a singing bouncer. He has a voice and looks to rival Luther Van Dross or a younger, scaled down Barry White. But he is very shy. You have to butter him up well but, when he sings – OMG. It’s best when he sings in the elevator. Refuse to leave til he’s finished. Can’t mind his name, unfortunately, so you’re best off asking them all to sing.
But if Barry White doesn’t rock your boat, then there’s always Jamie Brown (aka Gary Glitter from Peg and the Bouffants) or another Dundonian personality to dazzle you.
All agreed it was a good night and nice to go somewhere you can just dance like crazy, chill and not be hassled by Fat Sammites. And at £4 on the door it is possibly the cheapest, longest thrill you will get on a Friday night after closing time. Shame it’s just once a month.
